Tale
1944, Vermiglio, a remote mountain village
The arrival of Pietro, a deserter, in the family of the local professor, and his love for the professor’s eldest daughter, will change the course of everyone’s lives. Official Italian entry for the “Best International Feature Film” category at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025. Referenced in Close-Up: Why Do We Need the Venice Film Festival?
It is cinema at its best
(2024). “Vermiglio” struck me as a very beautiful, unusual and yet very relevant film. The acting is excellent and the narrative very well constructed, very moving and superbly directed.
I found the language extremely beautiful and the photography simply incredible
This is one of the best films I have seen in recent years. The family story is very plausible and the references to the social reality of Trentino during and after the Great War ring true and deserve to be seen as an experience of social analysis. The respect with which the religious dimension is treated deserves my highest praise.
The music is excellent and the sound of “Miserere” played at a moment of deep family pain was deeply moving for me
In other words, besides being poetic and truly beautiful, “Vermiglio” takes us back to a world that is about to disappear in Europe. Since I am not Italian, I am ready to visit the real Vermiglio and, once there, reflect on the effects of this wonderful film. It deserves to be seen by all those who love true cinema, who seek to understand the human condition and, most importantly, who do not give up the aesthetic dimension of life in today’s world.
