You can’t expect what Jacques Audiard delivers

(2024) El Alegato was written by Camille (as C. Dalmais), Clement Ducol and Jacques Audiard, and performed by Zoe Saldana. Audiard is a filmmaker who always surprises me with his work, as he creates interesting and very different stories than other films I’ve seen. A musical about Mexico, drug traffickers, gender, and corruption is a very strange concept, and it’s kind of confusing, but with Audiard’s direction and approach, it still works.

Audiard’s direction, writing, and atmospheric approaches are well thought out

The writing explores the character journeys and its inventive style really adds a lot to the setting. While there are many characters, not all of whom are likable, you still get to observe these characters and observe what they are and what their goals are. With good cinematography, production, and musical score, everything is excellent with performances, especially Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón both giving great performances. Musically, the songwriting is very good, and there are some really memorable songs that still burn in my head.

And a little too melodramatic

While some of the vocals and lyrics didn’t quite work, it came together as a piece. I appreciate the film for blending themes of transgender identity and depth with musical moments so well! The writing is good, but I have to admit, I wasn’t sold on every aspect as I found some aspects that felt clunky. Overall, this isn’t my favorite from Jacques Audiard, but one thing is for sure, this is something unique and unforgettable.
